We all saw the wonders Nintendo will be bringing us in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during their E3 Direct. Today we were hit again with surprise and awe as Nintendo announces new updates for the much anticipated Smash title for the Switch. Here is the rundown. Settle in, because there are a lot of goodies in here.

Chrom and Dark Samus join the battle as new Echo heroes! Echo heroes are basically an optional “skin” you can choose for the primary character that actually have slightly different moves and battle styles from their original counterparts. Chrom is the new echo for Roy and Dark Samus is the echo for Samus. As Sakurai put it, these were very highly requested characters for the game.

Last but not least, King K. Rool joins the roster! That makes 5 newly introduced characters to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character roster! We cannot wait to try all of them out.

Stages

Of course with new characters, comes new stages. With the introduction of Simon and Richter, Dracula’s Castle is an available stage. Not only is this the darkest stage for the smash universe, it also comes fully equipped with a special character that will appear on the stage: Dracula himself!

Nintendo also revealed some additional stages that were not previously announced:

  • Pokemon Stadium
  • Garden of Hope
  • Brinstar Depths
  • Summit
  • Unova Pokemon League
  • Magicant
  • Gamer
  • Final Destination
  • New Donk City Hall

There will also be all the stages from the N64 Smash game which brings the grand total of 103 playable stages that will all be available from the start of the game! All of these stages can be played in 8-player mode and in the select screen, they are displayed in chronological order based on the date and game in which they were released. Cool, right? You can also choose the Stage Warp option. This allows you to choose 2 stages. During the game, the current stage will morph into the other you have chosen and it looks awesome.

Music

There are 800+ tracks in this game! You can choose your favorites for each stage like you could in previous Smash games and preview them in their own menu. There is also an additional feature. If you wish, you can listen to the music from this game with your Switch in handheld mode and the screen turned off just like a giant mp3 player!

Battle Modes

A couple new modes have been added as well as some additional features in the well-known modes.

Squad Strike. In Squad strike, you pick a team of 5 or 3 and go head to head in 5v5 or 3v3 battles. When you lose, your character is eliminated and you switch to your next available character and do your best to be the last one standing!

Stamina mode is now a standard mode in the game!

Sudden Death. In addition to starting at 300%, the camera will also gradually zoom in making it harder and harder to stay alive.

Tourney. Tourney mode can have up to 32 players and is definitely great for big home parties.

Smashdown. In Smashdown, you select a bunch of characters with a special twist: If you win with your selected character, you can no longer choose them again. You must select a new character to fight with. This is essentially related to what the community has dubbed the “iron man challenge” where you stay as a single character until you lose, then switch to the next, starting from the first character slot on the top row. This sounds like a lot of fun!

Training Mode. There is a new training map with a grid which will help you gauge the distance of your moves and learn the tricks of the trade! There are also graphs and tools to show you how far your attack will send your opponent as well as their trajectory. This will be great for perfecting your art and getting those Ws in tournaments.

In addition to all of this, there will be an option to turn on the Final Smash meter. It is similar to Street Fighter where you charge up your EX meter and when full, can release your special attack. There cannot be more than one final smash happening on the screen at one time, so don’t worry about yours being canceled out.

Classic mode returns! The single player campaign known as Classic Mode is available. Each character you play has its own unique set of opponents you must face to clear this mode.
